Kid Expelled for Talking to His Mom in Iraq

This was sent to me by John C.A. Bambeneck, and here’s his post.

Mother’s Call Gets Son in Hot Water

Kevin Francois gave up his lunch break to talk to his mother, but it ended up costing him the rest of the school year.

Francois, a junior at Spencer High School in Columbus, was suspended for disorderly conduct Wednesdayafter he was told to give up his cell phone at lunch while talking to his mother who is deployed in Iraq, he said.

FYI: Columbus, Ga is the home of Ft. Benning, Ga.

Contact info for Spencer High School is here.

Here’s Michelle Malkin’s post on this: SCHOOL TO SOLDIER’S SON: NO “CONVERSATING” ALLOWED!

She observes that there certainly could have been a smoother conversation which wouldn’t have led to the kid disobeying a command because he didn’t want to hang up on his mother. Get real, people. If your mom was deployed in Iraq and you got a call from her, everything would stop and I would tell everyone to go f*** off, too. People should be using at least a modicum of common sense, don’t you think?

  2. Goodness, I really like the layout of your blog. And the name “The Wide Awakes” sounds like a good name for a punk band.

  3. I just heard that the school board dropped the suspension to three days. Evidently public pressure has made them take a second look at their idiocy.

  4. My answer is rather long winded but I did answer it at http://forum.pocketlint.org/viewtopic.php?p=54912 if you’re interested in reading my opinion.

  5. Dear God! The kid was NOT expelled! He was suspended… it makes a difference. One cannot not come back if one is expelled. And he should have been suspended. Why is it that this liberal is defending the conservative point of view?

  6. The rest of the school year means expelled. Since I put this up, they changed it to a 3-day suspension (probably because of the phone calls and the public outcry). Grow up with your nitpicking, already, will ya? Does that mean when things change you’re always revising your old posts?

Keep banging that spoon on the high chair, lol!

  8. Actually, they said the suspension was more for his inappropriate response to the teacher and not really the cell phone call itself. I would think that on a conservative blog, you would be advocating respect for the teacher not defending the kids temper and lack of respect.

  9. Perhaps the teacher was inappropriate. Leave it to a lib to be inflexible, even though the circumstances might warrant flexibility.

So in other words, rules are rules. So if Jimmy had to be home at 6:00 but he was hit by a car, then his mom should still ground him for not being home by 6:00.

  10. Perhaps she was inappropriate, you are right. However, the teacher stated that she did not know he was talking to his mom at the time when she asked him to give her the phone. He then apparently replied to her in a disrespectful way. I’m sure he didn’t just turn around and say something like “Hey, I know its against the rules, but its my mom calling from Iraq and I never get to talk to her, would it be okay if I talked to her at this time?” He easily could have done this. He obviously did not. If you want some flexibility in your rules, be respectful about it huh? Otherwise, he deserves to be suspended.
You all talk about 13 year olds needing to take responsibility for their actions (getting pregnant) but then turn around and take the hypocritical line that this kid doesn’t need to take responsibility for his disrespectful response to the teacher.
Yes, the situation warranted some flexibility in the rules. No, it did not warrant him being inappropriate.

  11. I’m sure all the people involved could have been more reasonable in this situation. My son just got back from Iraq, and he’s 27. He faced a lot of things after he returned home that he shouldn’t have…and that’s that’s been the general experience of our boys and girls who serve; they’re not being treated respectfully and their families face more difficult situations than they should. We should be honoring the people who are serving, and thanking them, rather than giving them and their families a hard time.

  12. I agree. Even though I may disagree with the Iraq war and especially the manner and timing in which it has been fought, I thank every soldier I run across for choosing to serve our country. Unfortunately, some people are unable to seperate disliking the leadership from disliking those who serve our country. That is sad.
