I begin with this quote from Donald B. Rinsley, M.D. from Borderline and Other Self Disorders (published by Jason Aronson, 1982):
“My view of wider sociocultural determinants is largely in agreement with that of Christopher Lasch (1977, 1978) who has related the decline of the nuclear family and the so-called culture of narcissism to the increased frequency of personality disorders. Dysfunctional childrearing, the failure of the public schools to impart basic literacy skills, and the bloated welfare bureaucracy have spawned a widespread psychology of entitlement with its notions of success without effort and income without productivity. The unfortunate children of perplexed, disarticulated, and dysfunctional families, now graduated from undisciplined schools with ‘open’ curricula, and social promotions, are the next generation’s borderline and narcissistic personalities. Thus, the combined failures of the family and the school as vehicles for the child’s progressive socialization leave these young people unprepared for the responsibilities and expectations of the wider culture to which they belong.
“…To paraphrase the late Philip Wylie, we have indeed spawned a generation of narcissists who now flood our public and private therapeutic facilities….”
With that said, in this the final chapter of our investigation into NAPPS(NArcissitic Peter Pan Paranoid Schizophrenia) we will attempt, through example, to understand the connections that link the syndromes involved. And how these connections build the single package-NAPPS.
First we must understand that the mind moves liquidly from one symptom to another, one syndrome to another, in order to protect itself in any given situation. To protect itself from fear, to regain control. Even to the point of denial and delusion if need be.
If you had read the three previous posts, you would most likely notice that many of the symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia overlap those of the Narcissist and the ‘Peter Pan’. It would seem to me that this would only make sense. That persons with syndromes that demonstrate certain symptoms would be more likely to fall victim to still other syndromes with similar or like symptoms. And I believe this is exactly what happens. So let us move forward.
I did not begin this investigation by sitting down and searching for ways to insult the left. I have watched them for years. Listened to their words. Attempted, mainly in vain, to understand the forces that drive them. And too often as I observe the left, in their words and their actions, I am saddened by how much of it is driven by fear.
The left’s disorders, and in reality the connections of the syndromes involved in NAPPS alluded to above, mainly arise out of fear and then finally encompass issues of control and denial. Thus, here we will look at how these connection between fear, denial, and issues of control are at the very heart of NAPPS.
The fears of the left include….fear of failure, fear of the future, fear of responsibility, fear of inadequacy, fear of the loss of control, etc. In the previous post I have shown how these fears exhibit themselves through the symptoms involved in the syndromes of NAPPS. Here I will attempt to show how the outcome of this fear and the need to regain control through delusion and denial shape the world view of the left.
First in Narcissism we deal with the fears of failure and inadequacy. Through reaction formation, the leftist’s mind builds a secondary ego, the Narcissist, who’s entire reason for being is to protect the true self. The Narcissist then presents itself as smarter, more powerful, and more deserving of your admiration. The Narcissist mind takes this stance in order to shelter and protect the true self from it’s fears. In order to regain control. Anger is the most common outcome when one denies the superiority or shows the inaccuracy of the Narcissist, thus threatening it’s control. When the Narcissist is shown to be wrong this anger is usually followed by denial.
The Narcissist is also the one we have to thank for the left’s love of legislating tolerance, compassion, and many of the ‘ism’s. It feels, in it’s superiority, that it can build a better world. And if you don’t agree, it is not because you have a valid opinion or any rights for that matter, it is because you are too stupid to understand. The Narcissist leftist mind desires control and if necessary it will use the government’s power of force to gain it.
As an example, we will look at one of the left’s pet projects…Socialism. The Narcissist, in the belief he is superior, feels that all below him are inadequate. Inadequacy is a negative in a free market democratic society. Socialism or it’s even more evil brother Communism are the havens of the inadequate. The Narcissist thus finds these forms of government to his liking. Unfortunately, history has proven again and again that Socialism just does not work. It breeds unemployment, laziness, poor quality, technological slowdown, and low output. This is where the Narcissist’s denial kicks in. He claims that past Socialist societies are somehow irrelevant as they were never instituted properly…as he, of course, would have done.
Next, through the use of the Peter Pan Syndrome the progressive mind protects itself from the fears brought on by adulthood. Fears of responsibility, the future, of life itself. If one never grows up, one will never be forced to face those fears. The progressive happily cedes the responsibility of his/her life to the nanny state and thus can never be held responsible for any negative events that pepper his/her life. Because he/she is not responsible for any negative event, there is never the threat of having to do or become better. And therein lies the control. The control of stasis. Denial is involved here, through the left’s attack on morals and ethics in society. To deny any absolute morality, through the selling of moral relativism, the leftist denies responsibility for any wrongs in society. It denies the need to make judgements on behavior thus protecting it’s own childish behavior.
Here again we will look at Socialism as an example. The progressive, not wanting personal responsibility or individual responsibility, embraces Socialism. It allows him to spread his responsibilities throughout the entire community. His denial of adulthood is then complete.
And now we come to Paranoid Schizophrenia. In the less extreme model here, it is a mechanism used by the liberal mind to avoid the fear of reality itself. If the reality that exists is an insult and/or is offensive to the liberal senses, a new reality must be created. He denies true reality and builds one more to his liking. Many times these realities involve Machiavellian villains and conspiracies. Look at the way liberals refer to Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Halliburton, etc. They regain control through the building of a new, more tolerable reality.
The liberal’s new reality many times presents itself through the hatred of evil corporations, demonic CEOs, and an economic system built to keep him enslaved. A evil system built by evil men designed to make it impossible for him to succeed. He sees Socialism as his messiah. He need not even try to succeed. It fits his new reality like a hand into a glove.
In the end, you see, it boils down simply to these factors…fear and control and denial. NAPPS is the mind of the left merely protecting itself from the realities of life. Simply protecting itself from the truth. So the next time you are tempted to get angry at the left for an idea or action so outrageous you can barely believe a sane mind could have imagined such a thing (i.e. Socialism), just try to be kind and keep in mind it may not be a sane mind at all.

My wife has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I cannot speak to the origin of her problems as I did not meet her until she was 50. Her own disclosure of both physical abuse (by her mother) and sexual abuse (by her father) are, predictably denied by her family and, according to them, made up by her. I am content to believe my wife and deal with her current condition.
As to her condition, I have seen my wife on a variety of medications and unmedicated. The difference between my wife on Zyprexa and on no medication leads me to believe that biochemistry plays a dominant role in her ability to cope with life. This leads me to believe that the disorder stems from both external environmental forces (familial dynamics, physical or emotional abuse) and from chemistry. Although the inter-woumb environment may have also contributed to her biochemical problems, I am less inclined to blame this.
Brain chemistry may be effected by environmental forces - severe parental beatings inflicted randomly without apparent connection to bahavior patterns of the one beaten, for example, may cause a young person to think in irrational ways that cause the brain to facilitate those ways of thinking in the attempt to survive the irrationality of the beatings by the parent.
My wife, unmedicated, is hyperaware and extremely paranoid. She attaches the most sinister meanings to the slightest noise, look, phrase, etc. This particular symptom makes little sense to me, except as a learned response, reinforced at an early age with thought patter pathways in her young brain, to the sort of physical attacks she describes from her mother.
The combination of medication (Zoloft & Zyprexa) and talk therapy allows my wife to live a fairly normal life. Without the medication, she would be in and out of psych wards living a life hardly worthy of the word.
I’m not sure what your point is with this article (I have not read your previous articles) but if it is to prove that syndroms such as BPD are somehow maladies ‘made up’ by lefty, liberal whiners, all I can say is, “Bull shit!. Kiss my ass!”
Of course, if I’ve misread your point, enlighten me.

I left a lengthy, thoughtful (I think) post that seems to have been sucked into a blackhole. How long does it normally take for comments to appear? Or do you read comments before posting? Anyway, it’s annoying.

Hello…..
Do you actualy post comments, or is this some sort of evil plot: promise dialoge but simply laugh at attempts to communicate with you?
Comment by Craig R. Harmon — 2/26/2005 @ 4:42 pm
Hi. I’m back again to see if my first comment had been posted yet. I’m disappointed to see that it has not. This is cool though, talking with you this way. I was, at one point interested in your reply. I’m afraid I losing patience. At this point I’m just commenting for the hell of it, to see how long, if ever, it takes for comments to show up.
Come on, won’t you please talk to me?
Comment by Craig R. Harmon — 2/26/2005 @ 4:57 pm
They need to be approved for some reason, even though the system is set for them to be automatically published. I am not always sitting at the computer. Sorry for the delay.
Comment by Cao — 2/26/2005 @ 4:58 pm
Ah, my comments are finally coming through, I see. I look forward to a response from you.
Comment by Craig R. Harmon — 2/26/2005 @ 5:00 pm
Okay. Explanation accepted. Computers are wonderful things. They perfectly carry out whatever instructions they are asked to do by us imperfect human beings.
Anywho, I’d like to talk about this psycological stuff, if your so inclined.

I sent an email to Glen. I’m not sure where he is right now. He’s the author of this piece, and I’m sure he’d be delighted to respond to you. As you can see in the upper lefthand corner of this blog, there are many writers here. And on the right hand side, you can see that we have a posting rotation.
There are always a lot of interesting articles of interest at TWA! (The Wide Awakes!)
If he doesn’t respond right away, check back later on, he might be out–it’s Saturday and he posted this early this morning. I’m sure he’ll be on later this evening and will respond to your friendly questions.
Comment by Cao — 2/26/2005 @ 5:08 pm
By the way, you can sort by Category here. On the left hand side, you can find Glen’s previous pieces. I would start with #1 and work up. I’d rather he be the one to answer your questions, though.

No, the point is NOT that your wife’s symptoms are made up. And the point is not an attack on those who have developed syndromes whether genetic or learned. The point is, the left embodies many of the symptoms that define these syndromes. If you had read the first three posts, I think you would understand that NAPPS is not a real syndrome at all. It is an analogy, and only a pseudo serious on at that, to explain the mental workings of the left. You have my sympathy, as do all who are truly afflicted, but they are not who these posts are aimed at. If you would like to discuss issues of psychology, which I am ever interested in, I would be very appreciative to do so.

Since my last comment, I did read your first post in the series and I get that now. The first quote in this fourth article did mention ‘borderline and narcissistic personalities’. That’s what got me going. Thanks for clarifying.

No problem. Really, I truly am interested in the workings of the mind. If you would like to converse further please e-mail me @ glenblagg@comcast.net.

Craig appears to be afflicted with LOC, (Lack OF Patience) understandable, as newcomers may not understand the workings of TWA’s. As to the comment “Computers are wonderful things. They perfectly carry out whatever instructions they are asked to do by us imperfect human beings.” We have a built-in safety net so as to weed out the impertinant insults that sometimes come along, and a by-product of this is a longer wait than some would prefer to see comments posted. I, too, sympathize with your wife’s condition and I am happy that you see the humor (agreed with or not) in the NAPPS anology.

I confess to the LOP affliction. It would not have flared up, however, had I been warned ahead of time that the comments would be delayed before appearing.
I am a definite believer in instant gratification.
