Sometimes I make the mistake of trying to understand the liberal mind. I will, quite stupidly I must admit, sometimes go to their websites just to get a feel for the waters. With the historic Iraqi elections on 1-30-05, I thought maybe there would be some uplifting posts and comments about how our great country had a hand in bringing democracy to the Iraqi people. I was, of course, disappointed.
From The Daily Kos, this:
‘The administration, press, and wingnut blogosphere is all atwitter(sic) over the “successful” Iraqi elections.
But the fact that 8 million Iraqis voted is not the measure of success. Just like catching Saddam wasn’t, or occupying Baghdad, or transfering “sovereignty”. Those events are miletones toward the ultimate outcome, but unpredictive whether that outcome is victory or defeat. And elections, historically, aren’t the end-all be-all for defeating insurgencies.’
And from The Democratic Underground:
ShinerTx said….
‘All the media keeps talking about is how happy the Iraqis are, how high turnout was, and how “freedom” has spread to Iraq. I had to turn off CNN because they kept focusing on the so-called “voters” and barely mentioned the resistance movements at all. Where are the freedom fighters today? Are their voices silenced because some American puppets cast a few ballots?’
And Borgnine says…
‘Such f—ing bull—t. Meanwhile, a neighbor of mine left for Iraq this morning, no doubt to spread as much “freedum”(sic) as possible before he’s gunned down.’
None of this surprises me much. Our president can do nothing right in the eyes of many liberals. Which brings me to the heart of this post. A repost actually, fom Sticks and Stones. It seems to be relevant to this issue. Here it is, with a few updates:
New York Times

The Journal of the American Medical Association along with the Center of Disease Control have today released word of a groundbreaking discovery sure to change the world as we know it. JAMA and the CDC, in a joint statement, have issued word that the cure for cancer has officially been found.
This discovery has been called the single greatest medical advancement in human history. It cures, it seems, every type of cancer known to man. In one fell swoop, the leading cause of death in humans has been eradicated.
“It is truly a golden day in human history,” Judie Golberding, Director of the CDC stated. “We must express our greatest gratitude to the man responsible for this discovery, George W. Bush.”
“He is truly a great man and his discovery will end so much pain and suffering throughout the world,” Fil B. Fontana, Executive Deputy Editor of JAMA stated.
Mr. Bush was unable to be reached for comment, but a Halliburton spokesman informed this reporter that Mr. Bush would be speaking later in the week.
But all is not roses. For some there is a dark side. On Capital Hill there was obvious grumbling.
“Sure, he cured something simple like cancer, but what is he doing about foot and mouth disease?” Quipped senator John Kerry from Massachusetts.
“He said he would cure scabies! He lied! Bush lied!” Screamed Barbara Boxer, a senator from California.
“Does this mean I won’t need colon checks? AAAARRRGGGHH!!!” Howled Howard Dean.
“I guess I’ll have to scrap the idea for my next documentary…’Bush, A Cancer on Humanity’.” Michael Moore was overheard complaining.
“I never really thought cancer was that big a deal anyway.” Bill Maher stated.
Ted Kennedy spouted, “Oooh boy, so he cured cancer. You’d think he got elections in Iraq or something.”
And from outside the Capital, muffled chanting could be heard…..
“Cancer ain’t smack, what about Iraq? Cancer ain’t smack, what about Iraq? Who needs a mammogram, when we’re poised to invade Iran? Who needs a mammogram, when we’re poised to invade Iran? ”

Glen you have exemplified in this piece what the liberal agenda is, “never ignore a chance to be partisan”. I really enjoyed the tongue is cheek NYT’s article. I do admit that seeing this in the Times is somewhat surprising.

Just be careful of another “Mission Accomplished” moment. Even the Bush administration is cautious. You might want to read a New York Times article from 1967 — when they were good and liberal. The headline says it all: “US Encouraged By Vietnam Vote. Officials Cite 83% Voter Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror”
