Sometimes I make the mistake of trying to understand the liberal mind. I will, quite stupidly I must admit, sometimes go to their websites just to get a feel for the waters. With the historic Iraqi elections on 1-30-05, I thought maybe there would be some uplifting posts and comments about how our great country had a hand in bringing democracy to the Iraqi people. I was, of course, disappointed.
From The Daily Kos, this:
‘The administration, press, and wingnut blogosphere is all atwitter(sic) over the “successful” Iraqi elections.
But the fact that 8 million Iraqis voted is not the measure of success. Just like catching Saddam wasn’t, or occupying Baghdad, or transfering “sovereignty”. Those events are miletones toward the ultimate outcome, but unpredictive whether that outcome is victory or defeat. And elections, historically, aren’t the end-all be-all for defeating insurgencies.’
And from The Democratic Underground:
ShinerTx said….
‘All the media keeps talking about is how happy the Iraqis are, how high turnout was, and how “freedom” has spread to Iraq. I had to turn off CNN because they kept focusing on the so-called “voters” and barely mentioned the resistance movements at all. Where are the freedom fighters today? Are their voices silenced because some American puppets cast a few ballots?’
And Borgnine says…
‘Such f—ing bull—t. Meanwhile, a neighbor of mine left for Iraq this morning, no doubt to spread as much “freedum”(sic) as possible before he’s gunned down.’
None of this surprises me much. Our president can do nothing right in the eyes of many liberals. Which brings me to the heart of this post. A repost actually, fom Sticks and Stones. It seems to be relevant to this issue. Here it is, with a few updates:
New York Times
by Robert Ludlum 5:16 PM ET
The Journal of the American Medical Association along with the Center of Disease Control have today released word of a groundbreaking discovery sure to change the world as we know it. JAMA and the CDC, in a joint statement, have issued word that the cure for cancer has officially been found.
This discovery has been called the single greatest medical advancement in human history. It cures, it seems, every type of cancer known to man. In one fell swoop, the leading cause of death in humans has been eradicated.
“It is truly a golden day in human history,” Judie Golberding, Director of the CDC stated. “We must express our greatest gratitude to the man responsible for this discovery, George W. Bush.”
“He is truly a great man and his discovery will end so much pain and suffering throughout the world,” Fil B. Fontana, Executive Deputy Editor of JAMA stated.
Mr. Bush was unable to be reached for comment, but a Halliburton spokesman informed this reporter that Mr. Bush would be speaking later in the week.
But all is not roses. For some there is a dark side. On Capital Hill there was obvious grumbling.
“Sure, he cured something simple like cancer, but what is he doing about foot and mouth disease?” Quipped senator John Kerry from Massachusetts.
“He said he would cure scabies! He lied! Bush lied!” Screamed Barbara Boxer, a senator from California.
“Does this mean I won’t need colon checks? AAAARRRGGGHH!!!” Howled Howard Dean.
“I guess I’ll have to scrap the idea for my next documentary…’Bush, A Cancer on Humanity’.” Michael Moore was overheard complaining.
“I never really thought cancer was that big a deal anyway.” Bill Maher stated.
Ted Kennedy spouted, “Oooh boy, so he cured cancer. You’d think he got elections in Iraq or something.”
And from outside the Capital, muffled chanting could be heard…..
“Cancer ain’t smack, what about Iraq? Cancer ain’t smack, what about Iraq? Who needs a mammogram, when we’re poised to invade Iran? Who needs a mammogram, when we’re poised to invade Iran? ”

This is a pure opinion piece and thus mine and mine alone.
As I watched the MSM coverage and read blogs from the region and their description of the Iraqi elections over the last 36 hours, I felt a great sense of pride in the fact that American men and women had brought Iraq to this point. Now is the time for the men and women of Iraq to take the torch and move down the path to full democracy. I have no doubts that Iraq will succeed; you could see it on the face of every voter as they waved their blue fingers while singing and dancing in celebration.
Today is not only a historic day but a day to be thankful. Thankful for the brave men and women of our armed forces for their steadfast duty and belief in our goals for Iraq, thankful for the brave men and women of Iraq for voting today despite the large number of obstacles. We need also to thank our President for his leadership and the faith that our cause was just in the face of opposition from liberals in this country and pretender allies abroad.
The American people who have supported our troops and their efforts from day one should also take pride that the job is nearing completion. By estimates of the provisional government, Coalition troops could start withdrawing within 12 to 18 months. The Iraqi National Guard and Iraqi Police showed that they are more then up to the task or protecting their fellow citizens. Iraq will be able to defend themselves against the Islamofascists who seek nothing but death and destruction.
The World stood and watched as democracy took its first steps in a strange land. The only ones who should feel shame on this great day are the UN and our pretender allies. Frankly in my humble opinion the United Nations is the biggest loser today. The United States with only help from Canada, on the elections, and the rest of our Coalition allies have succeeded in holding an open and free election when most thought such an event impossible.

I must start off by stating GBlagg kicked my ass ice fishing Saturday, 4-0. A few points must be made though, I only saw him catch one fish, and he selected my minnows. He gave me the devil minnow from hell that was bright red and probably scared the fish, but kudos to him anyway.
I have a couple of old posts I would like to post here. One is on Howard Dean, and one is on John Kerry. We need to keep our past thoughts in our mind about these guys because both want to be part of the future of the Democratic Party. Dean wants to be DNC chair, and Kerry wants another run at the presidency. We need to keep our information and writings of these guys, so we can follow their courses; what they’re saying now and compare it to what they’ve said in the past. This information will help us create stronger arguments in the future when they will be needed the most. My post on Dean is in reference to a speech he gave at Yale. The John Kerry post is in reference to his mindless wanderings after the election and his confusion as to how he could possibly lose. I hope everyone enjoys them now. Are the relevant today? Let me know.
Howard Dean’s Communist Manifesto
Originally posted 11/17/2004
Just think. The far left really wanted Howard Dean to be the Democratic candidate for President of the U.S. If one listens to him, one can discover his socialistic views. At least that’s what I originally thought. Then this article came out. I now believe he has communistic tendencies and philosophies. Is this where the left really wants to go? Let’s look at some excerpts:
“The media is a failing institution in this country,” Dean said Monday at a Yale University forum. “They are not maintaining their responsibility to maintain democracy.”
Who authorized the media to maintain democracy? Isn’t the responsibility of maintaining our democracy relegated to the voters and their elected officials?
Part of the problem, he said, was an almost complete loss of objectivity.
“You can’t read a piece of newsprint very often in this country without being told what to think,” he said, according to the Yale Daily News.
Yes Howard, we all saw the intense left-wing bias in the media; CBS, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, LA Times, etc.. I’m glad you caught on.
He claimed television networks, especially the Fox News Channel, were most to blame for the rise in flash and entertainment. He even suggested his now infamous “scream speech” after the Iowa Caucuses was partially a media fabrication, as it appealed to entertainment instead of news value. Thomas also acknowledged a slight liberal bias in the media, though he said reporters usually search for objectivity.
The “scream speech” was taped and played accurately. There was no media fabrication. None was needed. That was you, Howard. That was your true self, and it scared people. It showed you as the far left-wing psychopath that you are. Fox News, according to various polls, was the fairest of the networks regarding pro and con stories relating to the candidates. Even Evan Thomas acknowledges a left-wing bias. Accurate reporting sucks, doesn’t it Howard?
As far as solutions to Dean’s gripes, the former Vermont governor said it’s necessary to ensure diversity, and cap corporate ownership of media companies, even to the point of federal regulation.
“[The media] are incapable of regulating themselves,” Dean said. “What’s at stake is our democracy. If you think that American democracy can survive without an ethical media, then you are wrong.”
This is the scariest thing yet. For a government to gain control of the populace, it must first take over the media. This is an assault on the first amendment. Howard Dean wants the government to control the media, like China, Russia, and all the other communist countries. This is clearly a communistic philosophy and must not be ignored. The far left would control talk radio right now if it could. We must take all precautions against this from happening. I’m sure blogging would not be far behind. I suggest everyone start talking about this and bring it out in the open. We must not let this one slip by.
The Yale Daily News says Dean received a standing ovation from the crowd of about 200 who attended the symposium.
Potential future leaders of this country are in this crowd giving him a standing ovation. I don’t know what’s worse, Howard Dean proposing government control of the media, or the idiots in the audience agreeing with him. It’s time to take a stand.

While the world’s focus is on Iraq this day, as it well should be, I’d like to focus a bit on taxes in the United States as this month is the time when most people in the U.S. receive their various tax forms showing how many taxes are due. Many use this time to prepare their various forms of documentation proving the amount of taxes they have paid.
Keep in mind that taxes are not only the oppresive, punative income taxes, medicare taxes, and social security taxes — there are literally hundreds and hundreds of other, hidden taxes. For example, did you know that when you pay $1.85 for gas that you’re really paying between 20 and 50 cents per gallon in tax? I paid over $750 in taxes for gas for two vehicles last year. How did you do?
*Note: Different state charge taxes different ways, and some localities charge even more tax, so this calculation is just an estimation.

DO YOU REALLY THINK THE TERRORISTS -GIVE A DAMN WHAT WE THINK?

TODAY IRAQ VOTES! Let us hope and pray that they succeed, and win their freedom. For it is through freedom that we shall prevail and find our way to lasting peace.
DID YOU KNOW that the prevailing thought among the extreme left, the George Soros types. Is that they would like us to lose the war, not only to make President Bush look bad, but the overall feeling is that we deserve this for attacking Iraq, and for what? They say for Oil….but of course, we thoughtful and intelligent people, know that we could get all the oil we ever wanted from the money grubbing Saddam and Saudi Arabia. In fact going to war for oil is probably the most unintelligent argument there is, it makes absolutely no sense. Secondly, hoping that we lose this war is tantamount to treason, Why? Because in hoping that the enemy prevails, you are praying that our Soldiers die. And that my friends is shamefully Anti-American.
SENATOR KENNEDY’S solution is to use diplomacy and appeasement. Have you ever tried talking to a terrorist? If we would have gone through the United Nations, as many suggest; that would have been a fateful mistake. Because as we know now that the oil for food scandal revealed a corruption in the United Nations that is unequaled in its history. We know that Russia, France, Germany and many other nations got huge payoffs from Saddam. They would have never relented. It is my personal belief, that had we listened to the UN, and Saddam had remained in power that the threat from Iraq, along with Syria and Iran, would threaten the very core of our existence.
Here is what it all boils down to. Many Americans do not take seriously the terrorist threat that is before us,. We need to realize that 911 changed our lives forever.. We are in a World War, it is not Vietnam, not Korea, not Germany. It is a war that was started on our soil, on American property, taking American lives. We all need to realize that the The UN will not help us, they are corrupt as hell; The terrorists do not care about red, blue, black, yellow or white; The progressive left or the conservative right, they make no distinction. If we are Americans, then in their eyes we are evil, and they want us
dead.
So when you are at home, relaxing and taking it easy. Sitting at your computer, while the sun is warm, and the sounds of children playing in the streets and schoolyards. The dogs barking, the angels praying. You, writing about how we should support the UN and Hate America and the President. That we should use diplomacy and appeasement, to end the terrorist reign……..
DON’ T BE SURPRISED in the not so distant future; you hear a small sound. A click, just behind your head….and as you abruptly turn from where you are sitting, you are staring into the eyes of terror, into the masked eyes of the terrorist, and as you face him, you raise your hand in peace, and say to him, " come let us reason together, let us sit and talk out our differences, let us appease, let us find a common ground. you continue on, after all you say, I did not support the War in Iraq, I did not support President Bush, I wanted us to lose that war…."
The terrorist after hearing you speak so eloquently and diplomatically draws a smile underneath his mask leaving a broad strikingly calm impression….then in an instant……A LOUD! BOOMING! NOISE!………..then silence……….this terrorist looking down from his weapon into the face of the lifeless American; this terrorist without blinking an eye, this terrorist simply exclaims.."Who cares? Who the hell cares?"

Gangs viewed as ‘terrorists’
Ceres police chief says shootings support worry over rising militancy
Here is yet another example of the great job the crew over at The Modesto Bee are doing in reporting events surrounding the tragedy of Andres Raya and his murder of officer Sgt. Howard Stevenson. Furthermore, it appears Crystal Clear to me with Police Chief de Werk’s comment,"I hate to tell you, the days of May-berry are over." , he really gets it regarding the danger his officers and all Americans are facing with regards to ignoring the nihilism of gangs any longer. Although I don’t want to get into it completely right now as I am not quite up to it, I did also want to use this as what I see as an example of what I am talking about with regards to the way an individual or group of individuals might give meaning to an awful , tragic and senseless event. In this case the police suffered a great loss in the slaying of fellow officer Sgt. Howard Stevenson. They are stepping up to the plate to transform this event into something more than their loss. They are taking action with the hope and intent no others including BOTH the police force and their community will have to needlessly suffer in this way. De Werk said, “It will be a mistake if people believe we are doing this to attack any one group,” he said, noting that police are looking for gang members, not any ethnic group. “We don’t care what they look like.”
On the other hand, I gather from the contents of this linked article and others I have read, the gangs continue to be thugs and blame the police. There has been an increase in threatening graffiti towards the police. Chief De Werk, who increasingly appears to be a truly gifted civilian servant had to counter some stupid idea that his department was targeting Latinos for arrest in sweeps of gang areas that have followed the deadly attack. As I have written before, in my opinion, those who know the truth and reality of the gang infestation and are not speaking up are absolutely complicit. For the family and Latino community to ignore what this young man could have accomplished by serving our country and staying completely away from the gang and to miss the opportunity to come completely and bravely forward and not hide behind their shared delusion gangs weren’t a part of this evil, serves to ensure it will only happen again to some other soldier, some other family , and some other community.

Oh, this is supposed to be about me isn’t it? Well, I was born in Germany in 1946 in Bayreuth, Germany. My dad was part of the constabulary, read occupation forces, and my mom was a soldier’s wife, born in Houston to a Methodist preacher. My early recollections of life are primarily of living in different places as dad was transferred from post to post and I grew up loving the moves, the military and all things about this great country of ours.
Being an Army Brat (and Damned Proud Of It Thank You Very Much) provided me with an education not often equaled by folks who are in civilian life, and later, joining the Army after college further rounded out my love of country and all it stands for.
Traveling around the world also helped me understand how fragile our liberties are, and how easily they can be taken for granted. Now I’m pushing past 60 and have been blogging for two years plus, sharing my thoughts with others, and receiving lots of interesting feedback as well. So, read my posts, think about what I’ve said and comment as you desire. Just remember, that Freedom really isn’t free, and if we are to maintain the freedoms that this great country has given us, we need to always strive to help others gain their freedoms as well.

Between watching this clip,(thanks Raven)
the beginning of the Hilldebeast’s campaign for the 2008 election, and this being my first post on The Wide Awakes, I figure now is as good a time as any for me to declare outright war on the left. No more pussy footing around. Oh yeah, it is on. And just to infuriate the left, hell, I’ll even fully admit this is a war for oil! But what is most historically amazing here is that I enter this conflict with a total utter lack of fear. The lack of which, no previous warmonger has ever enjoyed.
For there really is no reason to fear.
First, we have all the guns. The left hate guns. ‘They’re shiny, and scary, and they make loud noises.’ They shout. ‘They kill Bambi for God’s, uh I mean Mythological Superstition’s, Sakes!’ To this I say, I too like Bambi. Bambi burgers, Bambi sausage, Bambi steaks. Their mantra has always been ‘People don’t kill people, guns kill people’(the left’s exemption to this rule, of course, is George W. Bush, who they are sure is at this very moment scheming of ways to kill your children). This mantra is just fine with me, as my army will come packing iron, theirs probably packing for France. Shoot(oops), most progressives won’t even let their children own toy guns. Toy Guns! Hey, there’s an idea, maybe my army should just bring plastic guns to the battle. And when we get there, we could explain how just possessing these faux guns has now influenced us to become cold blooded killers. That threat alone could end the war. But I hope not.
Actually, we may not even need the guns. Really, have you seen some of these PETA-freak, tofu heads. You could bowl most of them over with a feather. We could just say we are Islamic terrorists. They’d likely surrender right then and there.
Secondly, no self respecting antiwar progressive would dare even fight in the first place. They would first go cry foul to the UN. Then, of course, they’d organize protests, and million- (insert flavor of the month here) marches, and have anticapitalist, swastika laden banner making parties. They would contact the media and their in-pocket ‘journalists’ would flood the airwaves with their anti-Sticks and Stones rhetoric…from the safety of their hotels rooms, of course. Think about it, if the left truly believes that war is always wrong, they could not fight back. “Give peace a chance.” They’d plead. Because, of course, their pacifism has worked so well in the past. Pacifists stopped the horrors at Auschwitz….oh, no, I guess they didn’t, it was the Allied soldiers. Well, Sean Penn and his human shields halted the filling of mass graves in Iraq, didn’t they? Uh, guess that’s a nope too, it was coalition soldiers. Well, surely the peaceniks have stopped the killings in the Sudan…hmmm, must not have, the blood still fills the streets. As in the above examples, it is fairly certain they will not put up much of a fight. Thus, we will be victorious. And when my soldiers begin taking the spoils of war to which they are entitled, how could the enemy argue. For they are the ‘party of entitlements’, after all! I can see myself now, addressing the troops, “Step back soldier, Kennedy’s water logged Olds sedan is mine!”
I am sure the above would work just fine, but as I think of it, this could end up being simply a war of attrition. We, the right, need only to stand back and wait. It may very well take a generation or two, but if we are patient victory will surely be ours. Here is the plan…we just let the libs abort themselves out of existence! Their holy grail, Roe vs. Wade, in the end is our greatest ally. The seed they have planted, through their wanton disregard for the lives of their own unborn children, will reap their ultimate defeat.
And lastly, if none of the above works, I’ll pull out my Marx card. “Comrades,” I’ll shout. “Lay down your….uh…protest banners?…This is not war, it is revolution! But it is you who are truly revolting! It is we, the right. We are the modern proletariat, the true earners, the real workers. And you the left are the neo-bourgeoisie. We earn and you take. We build, you tax. We risk, you redistribute. We live, you fear. Surrender now to the hypocrisy of your own minds.”
Ahhh, it’s late, I’m Wide Awake, and the dogs of war are barking…
Postscript. No liberals were killed in the posting of the above, but a flash Pew Research poll of progressives found:
94% were offended
83% felt it lacked compassion
73% believed it was intolerant
12% screamed ‘You need to keep your damn hands off my uterus’
and,
1% of college professors ‘nearly blacked out or threw up’

It’s been a long, rough ride for the BBC in Iraq, what with the invasion, the looting, capturing Saddam, the Shia insurgency, Abu Ghraib, the interim government, missing WMD’s, the Sunni insurgency and on and on and on.
There are two interesting things about these milestones: each was billed by the BBC as an impending disaster, and each failed to be, well, disastrous at all. Alright, the situation is far from perfect, and it does sometimes seem as though coalition forces take two steps forward and one step back. Yet. Here we are, a day away from free and democratic elections. Surely that should count for something?
Well, not if you work for the BBC, it doesn’t. Undaunted by every one of their past failures to predict the collapse of the war effort, they just dust themselves down, find something else to worry about, and carry on carping.
Indeed, watching the coverage of the war has given conservative viewers a malicious insight into what must go through the mind of a goldfish, swimming in endless circles past the plastic castle it has never, in its entire life, noticed before.
For the BBC, this ‘plastic castle scenario’ plays itself out in language along the lines of:
‘Disaster looms large for President Bush’ … ‘Hopes are failing for a resolution to the crisis’ … Oh! It worked! … [PAUSE] … ‘’Disaster looms large for President Bush’…
Yes, the endless, repetitive circles do get tiresome after a while, but there’s also a sort of horrid fascination. When are they going to realise? Can they possibly go around another time? And another? Don’t these morons even remember what happened last month? Surely, they can’t keep this up forever …
The pessimists, and one has to say that they are in the vast majority these days, point to the avalanche of violence which is overwhelming the Iraqi security forces and which will make it difficult for the Sunni population in central Iraq to get to the vote.
Oh. OK. I’d better shut up before I start insulting the intelligence of goldfish.
